Food and Drink, one of the four primary categories of loot in DayZ, refers to any item or liquid that can be consumed by a survivor for sustenance. Used to replenish a survivor's energy and hydration, food and drink is perhaps the most important of the four categories of loot. Food typically replenishes both energy and hydration, while drink typically only replenishes hydration.

Food decays over time.
All food items will be good for a certain amount of hours, before it spoils and becomes rotten. Food will decay between 75-100% of the items decay time limit. This makes it important to prepare raw food before it spoils as cooked goods last longer.
Food will also spoil faster in the players inventory than in a tent or elsewhere on the server.

A comparison of nutritional values can be found below in the Comparison Tables. Energy/Water is defined as the quantity of energy/water that a full item contains. However few items have 100% of its content remaining so the effective value is often lower (e.g. opening cans or skinning animals). The stomach value indicates how many milliliters of your stomach's 2000 ml capacity the food will take up.
