Player restraining is a game mechanic that allows a player to handcuff and restrain another player in DayZ.

There are currently two methods to restrain a player: The most efficient one requires handcuffs and optionally handcuff keys to unlock the handcuffs.[1] The other way to restrain someone is by using a rope. The player being restrained can, but does not necessarily have to be in the surrender position.[2]

Players that have been restrained have restricted movement, use of items, but are able to struggle. If a player persistently struggles, they will eventually free themselves from their restraints. Note that the durability of the handcuffs influences the time it takes to break free.

[1] Restrained players can be looted of their gear, and force-fed consumables like rotten fruit and disinfectant spray.

Unconscious players can also be restrained.
