Vehicles

Offroad Hatchback, Transit Bus and Civilian Sedan together.

Vehicles are used as a means of transportation for people over the terrains of DayZ and also as a means of item storage. They can be found in many different places, usually near buildings, and can be found in various states of damage -- sometimes with various parts attached, missing or broken and lacking fuel or water. These parts may have to be replaced or repaired and fuel and water will have to be added before Survivors can make proper use of the vehicle.

Vehicles are some of the few components of gameplay with persistence enabled until they are completely destroyed, have been left unused for a long time period, or been placed outside the playable limits of the terrain, after which the vehicle will usually be respawned at a new randomized location. As with most things in the DayZ world not connected to your actual character, vehicles are non-transferable between servers. Currently, all land vehicles are driven in manual transmission and require proper gear shifting in order to operate (PC default: Q and E; PS4/5 default: X and Circle; Xbox default: A and B for down and up shifting respectively)

General Repair

While doors, hoods and trunks don't need to be repaired or replaced to keep a car going, parts like wheels, batteries, spark plugs, the engine and car radiators should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible to reduce the risk of having your car brake down.

To repair any wheel combine it with a Tire Repair Kit. If a wheel is ruined it will display just the wheel without the tire.

To repair the engine hold a Blowtorch in your hand and interact with the engine. You can repair it all the way to prestine. The car will let you know if you need to repair the engine when you are in the car and the 'check engine' light appears in the turn rate dial.

If the car radiator is damaged or badly damaged it will leak thus using water at a much faster rate.

To repair the car or truck battery combine it with Electrical Repair Kit.

Like the car radiators, spark plugs can not be repaired and thus also need to be replaced. It is recommended to keep a spare spark plug on you at all times because unlike the car radiator where the car can be started but will constantly need to have its engine repaired, a ruined spark plug will not let the engine even start.

To repair any door, trunk, hood, engine or radiator use or combine it with Blowtorch with gas canister attached. (Note: Repairing the door will only repair the actual door, increasing its durability, it will not repair broken windows)

Notes

THIS HAPPENS MOST OFTEN ON CONSOLE

  • If a vehicle doesn't have all wheels, be careful when you get in. The car can glitch out and potentially kill the survivor getting in or survivors around the vehicle.
  • Vehicles without all wheels, can fly into the air and kill the survivor(s) inside of the vehicle.

Trivia

  • In 0.62, users were able to use a matchbox to destroy vehicles, which allowed them to despawn properly.
  • A Command variant of the V3S was once teased but never confirmed.
  • Vehicles originally required Motor Oil but is neither currently spawning nor necessary for functional vehicles.
